7-Zip (LZMA) offers the best usable compression for most data types and is widely supported (e.g., via Total Commander plugins). While other algorithms achieve higher compression, they are often incredibly slow. For large datasets, FreeArc is a great alternative—it uses 7-Zip-like compression but features a larger dictionary. Alternatively, NanoZip (using nz_optimum2) is slightly slower than 7-Zip but yields archives that are a few percent smaller, and it includes a basic GUI.
For specific file types, StuffIt can compress JPEGs and MP3s by about 15% (where others max out at 3%). WinRAR outperforms 7-Zip on 16-bit WAV files; however, if the WAV format isn't required, a lossless audio codec like Monkey's Audio (on Insane/Very High) is preferred.
Many files, especially games, already use weak compression like zlib. To maximize compression, you must first unpack these zlib streams using dedicated tools like Precomp, XTool, or ZTool. UltraArc (by Razor) serves as a helpful frontend to simplify this workflow.
Personally, I combine 7-Zip and FreeArc when recompressing game mods.
